To what extent does Pitch Black Heist conform to the heist genre?

The main way in which Pitch Black Heist conforms to the heist genre is in the way in which the way the lead protagonists are criminals. For example, in many heist movies the protagonists stereotypically end up being a criminal who audience sympathises with (e.g. family, charm, etc.). More specifically because of this similarity with Pitch Black Heist, the audience presume that it will follow the same conventions and formula of a stereotypical heist film. This shows that the conventions of the film genre are still being followed to this day.

However, the film also subverts the expectations of the genre by not showing the object that the protagonists are stealing and instead show an entirely black shot which the impact of this is done by showing the Michael and Liam talking. For example, the protagonists narrate the entire scene, putting an emphasis of their importance to the plot. More specifically, this subverts the expectations of the audience and instead reminds them of importance of the characters to the story, which showed later on when Michael betrays Liam. This shows the contrast in between the short film and the genre itself.
