Timothy Edward Burton is an American Filmmaker, animator and artist. Burton was born in 1958, in Burbank, California. As a preteen, Burton would make short films in his backyard using crude stop motion animation techniques or shooting on 8mm film without sound. His interest in stop motion can be seen later on his films like Frankenweenie and The Nightmare Before Christmas. In his early career as an animator, storyboard artist, graphic designer, art director and concept artist on films such as The Fox And The Hound, Tron and The Black Cauldron. His first theatrical release was Pee Wee's Big Adventure, a family-friendly, adventure film with a light hearted tone, which is very different to the rest of Burton's work. Burton is best known for is use of Gothic Suburbia and his weird concepts and world building, along with a common use of characters that feel isolated.

One of his most famous films is 1989's Batman. The film shows Batman unintentionally cause the creation of the Joker and having to stop him and his crimes because Batman feels responsible for him. Burton's gothic style and dark, atmospheric lighting perfectly matches the tone of Batman and the world he lives in. Along with great performances and Danny Elfman's fantastic orchestral score, Burton creates a near perfect movie that is responsible for the success for superhero movies today. The movie received positive critical reception and grossed $40.49 million in 2,194 theatres during its opening weekend.

Another one of his most famous films is 1988's Beetlejuice. The film shows a a happily married couple being killed in an accident and waking up as ghosts and a new family is moving into their house. They ask help from Beetlejuice to scare the family away. Burton uses a variety of gory and disturbing imagery to emphasize the weird and psychedelic nature of the film. The movie met positive critical response and earned over $8 million in its opening weekend.

Themes these movies both share are individuals who feel detached from the world they live in. The films also use gothic suburbias as settings to perhaps reinforce the films weird nature.

I believe Burton is an auteur because his films follow the same sort of formula of weird and unrealistic storytelling and imagery. His vision isn't interfered with by movie producers.
