How does the director make an impact on the audience through the character of Girl?

The director makes an impact on the audience through the portrayal of Girl as throughout the short film it is given a realistic yet comedic tone, which emphasises shock when it suddenly changes. This can be seen through the technique of fast editing and cyclical camera shots. This creates makes the story of the film seem constant and makes it more jarring and noticeable when it changes. The consistency of the shots matches the tone of the film and changes as soon as the shot does. The fast paced feel of it allows the audience to perhaps miss some of the foreshadowings of the twist. For example how she says she's good at hiding things, which could be alluding to how she has hidden babies before.

Another way the director makes an impact on the audience is by creating empathy for Girl. For example, Girl is wearing a puffer jacket and big hoop earrings,  conveying the idea she is a chav. This furthermore displayed when she is shown to be a loud and confident person. Because of this the audience assumes they know who Girl. However, when its slowly revealed that she doesn't live with her Dad and her Mum doesn't treat her right, the audience feel bad and may start to empathise with her if they have/had similar situations. This is finished by the twist making the audience believe they don't know Girl at all and that they just assumed.

Shaun Of The Dead Opening Analysis

The opening scene uses editing, camera angles and sound to establish Shaun's character and his relationship with Liz and Ed. Firstly, the scene begins with the sound of the bell and zooming out slowly from Shaun's face. Being close up highlights his facial expression: he is wide eyed, apathetic, he is daydreaming. This is emphasised by the framing of the shot, as the background is blurred and Shaun is clear. Having him in the centre of shot shows how Shaun is absorbed by his own problems and is unaware of everyone else around, including Liz and her wants and needs. This idea is further reinforced when Liz transgresses the rhythm of scene with her dialogue. It reveals that Liz was talking all along but Shaun wasn't paying attention because her dialogue starts mid conversation. The Grandmother Analysis

    HOW DAVID LYNCH TURNS THE ORDINARY INTO NIGHTMARISH One thing The Grandmother subverts from innocent to unsettling is childhood. David Lynch's creepy and imaginative direction gives the scene a nightmarish and unsettling tone. For example the scene where the mother is comforting the child turning into a intense scuffle between the two is demonstrated through the use of sound and editing. The cyclical echo of the scream progressing into a high pitch shreak is an unnerving and disturbing sound that perfectly matches the intensity of the scene; as the scream gets more and more distorted and intense so does the editing of the scene, using quick cuts between shots to emphasise the chaotic nature.
