My Interpretation Of Connect

My interpretation of Connect is that its about the power of imagination and that we use it to elevate our mood and possibly a way to escape reality. For example, the majority of Connect is set during an ordinary, crowded London bus. The abundance of people and lack of free space gives it a claustrophobic and chaotic tone. This is emphasised with the close up shots of the characters hand, highlighting their physical closeness. This maybe depicting how the lead feels entrapped and oppressed by mundane, everyday life and, by proxy, to escape its chaotic nature, goes into her imagination to obtain high moral.

Another example of my interpretation in Connect is seen when the man in the suit shoots the lady. The editing of this scene allows the audience to understand the lead is imagining it. First of all, when the lead puts her headphones on, the music is diegetic as it sounds like its coming from her headphones. However, it subtly transitions into non-diegetic sound as the music is played to score the scene. The change is displaying how the lead has started day-dreaming and how she is immersed in her imagination. This is furthermore emphasised when the man shoots the woman. This is clear contrast from the realistic and ordinary setting from before and the tone changes to a more wacky and unrealistic. This is evident from the shot of the man reading the newspaper with the blood covering it and the man next to him being apathetic towards it. This displays the weird and unrealistic change in the narrative.
